You know, all those things we gloss over while we devour nineteenth century novels. from the Victorian era that provide insights into how actual people would have gone about bathing, dressing, eating, and the like. She includes real passages from real books, pamphlets, magazines, etc. Oneill gives the reader the run-down on aspects of women’s everyday life of that George Eliot and Jane Austen left out of their books. It’s unforgettable because you’re about to learn more than you ever imagined (or, in your sweetly naive fantasies about your Jane Austen-esque alter ego, forgot to imagine–GUILTY) about the bathroom options of the 1800s. Unmentionable takes the reader on an unforgettable journey through the nineteenth century. It’s also one of the most horrifying books I’ve read in a long time.
